Around the year 1000 AD, Eriksson was the first European to discover the land of today's American continent. The so-called 'solsteinn', the sunstone, served him as an ideal navigation aid. This crystal is the perfect tool for your journeys into the legendary Viking Age and should not be missing in any authentic re-enactment collection.
The Compass of the Vikings
Barbarian raids, enslavement and destruction' the trademarks of the Vikings are widely known to this day and are depicted and revived on medieval markets. In addition to cruelty, the Vikings also symbolise rich trade, fascinating craftsmanship and great adventures.
The young sailors from the North Sea and Baltic region set off on their dragon boats in their homeland to look for fame and wealth in the distance. On their sea voyages they orientated themselves mainly by the stars and the sun, while uncertain weather conditions made their journeys more difficult. In order to locate the sun behind clouds, fog or even at dusk, the Vikings used the sunstone.
Fascinating technology of the Vikings
The technical function of the calcite stone is extremely interesting. In order to determine the exact position of the sun, one looks through the crystal. The calcite refracts the light of the sun into two light beams, so that the stone has to be turned until both light beams are equally intense.
