The Urnes style of the vikings
The so called style of Urnes is the last big vikings' style and is dated to the middle of the 11th century. Its name it has because of the big church of Urnes in Norway, whose woodcarvings of the portal are of an impressing beauty. The style was a development of the Mammen and Ringerike style and presents depictions of animals of small, slender and snake-like way with sharp heads in partly three-dimensional images.
A special effect was created by the combination with gracefully drawn lines. A little speculative, but logical is the assumption, that here it was a main motive, the animal wreathed by a snake, about a depiction of the endless fight between good and evil.
