The Egyptian cult of Anubis
Anubis, closely associated with the Upper Egyptian god Upuaut, is the ancient Egyptian deity of rites for the dead. His depiction shows either a reclining black dog or a human with a prominent jackal or dog head. In his hand Anubis carries a was-scepter and an anch.
The jackal as a desert animal mythologically stood for the canids. These jackals, dogs and wolves, like the dead, were associated with the desert and were considered soul guides into the realm of the dead.
Anubis, as the god of the rites of the dead, supervised the embalming and received the mummy in the tomb. According to Egyptian mythology, Anubis protectively placed his hand on the mummy, performed the ceremony of opening the mouth, and thus guided the soul of the deceased to the "Field of Heavenly Offerings."
In the Old Kingdom, Anubis is known as the judge of the dead, who, together with Thoth, conducts the afterlife judgment. The Egyptians addressed their prayers for the dead to Anubis, as his most important task was to supervise the weighing of souls. Anubis accompanied the deceased souls on their journey into the afterlife eastward to the shores of the constellation Eridanus, which symbolized the border between the realm of the living and the dead. The priests of the dead in office at the time wore an Anubis mask when performing their rituals.
