Historical relief for teaching history in a creative way
While your students paint the historical relief of the Egyptian King and Pharao, you can tell them stories about the ancient Egyptian Tutankhamen (also known as Tutankhaton). He was a pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (new Kingdom). He ruled from 1332 to around 1323 BC. He became known when Howard Carter discovered his nearly unplundered Tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. Tutankhaton had ascended the throne four years after the death of Akhenaten. There is the presumption that the child King was heavily influenced by the pressure of the priesthood, senior officials and probably also by Eje, who carried the title "God father", due to the very young age of the new Pharao.
Has his predecessor had introduced the worship of a new, a single God, ATEN, and the priesthood wanted to return to the older gods and restore the conditions prior to Akhenaten’s "Revolution", the exerted pressure on the young Pharao. It is evident in the slow shift away from the cult of ATEN at the beginning and during the reign of Tutankhamun. He, therefore changed his name and took the throne name "Neb-cheperu-Re" and married the third daughter of Akhenaten, who was actually his sister or half-sister.
What exciting stories around the relief’s motif
The Pharaoh changed his birth name from Tutankhaton (the living image of ATEN) to Tutankhamun (living image of Amun or in honour of Amun) and the his wife from Anchesenpaaton (she lives for/by Aton) Anchesenamun (she lives in for/by Amun). The task undertaken in the second year of the reign of Akhenaten was to move the Royal Court to Memphis, thge newly created capital.
Anubis is the ancient Egyptian God of death rites. In the context of the Osiris myth the origin of his name is reported: as Crown Prince (Inpu), who is in its linen (imiut), he was hidden by Nephthys (for Isis). Thus he was born with his name Anubis. The Jackal of Anubis was soon linked to the Western desert of Egypt. Later, when Osiris replaced Anubis as a deity of the dead, Anubis was seen as his underling and headed the weighing of the heart in the Court of the dead. Those, who failed this test, then were swallowed by Ammit. Anubis was the patron god of the Egyptian military. From the time of the new Kingdom we find tomb seals representing Anubis sitting on the nine arch, which symbolizes his dominance over the enemies of Egypt.
