Roman skeleton cup terra sigillata
The skeleton cup from Boscoreale
The villa of Boscoreale close to the southern slope of Vesuvius is next to Pompeii, Oplontis and Herculaneum one of the most important places destroyed by the eruption of the volcano in 79 AD, that supply today’s archeologists with immense amounts of information about the ancient way of life. Among the discoveries in the villa was the strongly famous "silver treasure of Boscoreale"(today in Paris’ Louvre), too. As well it contained two silvern cups, on which were imaged the skeletons of Greek philosophers named in inscriptions. Very rarely such cups, even though not marked with inscriptions, come to light.
