Roman Patera with beautiful Design and Handles

A gem of a Patera

This Roman Patera is a quite exceptional gem with attention to detail, very elaborately mounted with a plastic half relief, which depicts a beautiful Roman. The figure, sitting on a chair, looks into a mirror. It should probably represent an image of the goddess Venus personified as a Roman noblewoman.

  • Patera diameter 36cm
  • The bowl height 7 cm
  • Terra Sigillata
  • With two handles

History of the Patera

The ancient Patera was used as a dish, both by the Greeks and the Romans, often found especially in the South Italy as an item in Roman cult areas. The Patera, sometimes called also button handle shell, is a special form of Apulian red-figure pottery. The antique bowls measured 70 centimeters in diameter and had on the edge two handles in typical button form. In the interior, one often finds tomb scenes. Exteriors were rare, therefore, this antique vessel made by hand may considered as a particular rarity!

The form was used as a sacrificial bowl in the entire area of Roman culture. The libation (libatio), or wine sacrifices, were made using a shell. Sometimes, after an animal sacrifice one also used a Patera to catch the blood of the animal. Our Patera, however, was less bloody, but was used by the Romans for drinking at table, one of the reasons why it is particularly splendid.

Our Patera is an authentic reproduction of an original find. It is very elaborately produced with a relief on Terra Sigillata with two handles. Each piece will vary, because they are all individually handmade, hence each is really unique as in Roman times. Of course, the glazed part can be easily cleaned simply using water.
