A roman standard with a lot of symbolism
Already from the 2nd century on, the first roman standards have been known as highly ranked field signs which were normally decorated with the Aquila (latin eagle). As the print on that bookmark shows, it could also have been a wooden hand as a symbol of the serving commander of the legion.
Roman standards were supervised by especially highly ranked soldiers who were often bodyguards as well. Furthermore they got extra salary and were highly admired. Losing such a roman standard meant maximum shame.
The size of a roman standard could vary as different individual field signs (Signa) have been applied. Most of the time these were animals such as boars, bulls or wolves which are specifically strong, fast or clever.
How about your own "Signa"?
The pictured roman standard with laurel wreath, the hand, the three disks and the flag stripes can be colored according to your own taste with coloring pencils, water colors, felt pens or wax crayons. Especially coloring pencils or felt pens are recommended. As the back side has no print, this can be designed with your own roman standard. Let your imagination run wild. Every student knows stories from comic books of the two rebellious gauls and has heard words such as legions, cohorts or centurion before. That allows him to create something individual on his own.
Past history – interesting still today
Nowadays it is hard to believe that losing the roman standard meant that the corresponding legion lost their honor and was not able to participate in the fights anymore. The bookmark sized 19 x 5 cm can be protected from age by lamination. Only good care by the student protects this unique copy from loss.
