The concept "turning cup" comes from the drinking glasses being put on the table the upside-down after downing their content in one and turning it. The cup without foot was used already in the Merovingian time in royal classes. That way for example you could bend forward the risk of being poisoned. The cup without foot as well today is known by the pirate Klaus Störtebecker.
