Temple in Egypt a sanctuary

The Schreiber sheet "Temple in Egypt" images a typical main temple, how it was to discover similarly in many Egyptian temple constructions of the time between 1550 and 1070 BC. It even seems, that a so called book of the temple existed describing the ideal structure of the temple and the life inside of it. Today still the maintained constructions like Philae or Edfu obviously are oriented on it.

The temple is structured in its main part into four sections: the gate building (Pylon), the inner courtyard, the foyer and the holy area.

The gate building of the temple

The gate building consists of two towers flanking the actual gate. On the towers' walls you can see images of Egyptian gods as well as masts with triangular flags. The portal leads to the inner courtyard with its columns symbolising plants' stems. On the walls are reliefs.

The foyer

After the courtyard there comes the foyer. It was the entrance to the actual temple building and structured into various rooms. One room was a library. The other one served the priests for their ritual cleaning and keeping of objects for sacred ceremonies. In further rooms offerings were prepared.

Behind the foyer there was the shrine of the temple building. Here only the priest respond for the ceremony was allowed to entre. The main room of the shrine was surrounded by a colonnade, in which probably altars for smaller gods found their place. In the middle of the main room stood on a pedestal the so called Holy skiff with the god's statue.
