Who were the Knights Templar
The Knights Templar were a Christian knightly order, around which many legends and myths entwine. The Knights Templar flourished between the 12th and 14th centuries. The Order of Knights was founded due to the First Crusade and for the first time united the ideals of noble chivalry and monasticism. Thus, during the Crusade, the Knights Templar were virtually a kind of elite military unit. Like other knights, the Templars were equipped with tools of war, including swords. The swords themselves were elaborately designed and, from today's perspective, some of them were true gems.
The history of the sword
The origin of the medieval crusading sword is ultimately the further development of the large and massive Viking swords. With imagination, the blade and the shape of the sword can be perceived as a Christian cross. Often the blades had letters or inscriptions engraved on them, such as the motto of the order.
Use of the Templar sword
A real Knight Templar went on crusade with the sword to defend himself and to use it as a fighting weapon. But the sword was also important at formal ceremonies, for example a coronation or at the appointment to the knighthood ('I knight you'). Since your sword is made of wood, you can easily swing it with one hand or carry it tied around your waist, so that you always have it at hand in case of a fight.
