The Lares were Roman household gods that were worshiped within a family, but their field of responsibility was not clearly defined. A prayer to a Lar could on one hand represent a general request for the health and welfare of the family, or on the other hand include profane expectations such as the hopes of a host for a successful feast.
Therefore, the Romans believed that Lares were responsible for the prosperity of the family and household, but they were also regarded as the central reference point of the Roman household. Even later on in the Roman history, as old faiths and mythologies gradually disappeared behind Christian views of the world, the Lares still managed to defend their status as cult objects for a long time.
