Egyptian Scarab Pendant
Scarab pendants are more and more often found today as a piece of jewellery. The gold-plated scarab pendant is especially suitable as a necklace. It looks noble and fashionable at the same time. But what exactly is this pendant with a mystical trunk?
Definition and origin
As you can guess at first glance, the scarab is an insect and, to go further, a beetle animal. However, the scarab pendant is not based on any beetle, but on a dung beetle: the Egyptian scarab, which was the cultural symbol for the resurrection in ancient Egypt. The comparison to life is not so far away. Just as the sun emerges on the horizon in the morning, so the scarab (= the becoming) emerges from the beetle from the dung ball. It should donate light and warmth and therefore carries the pleasant nickname sun beetle. Already at that time this symbol was worn as jewellery. Protective amulets in scarab form were traditional mummy gifts for the deceased, in the hope of a rebirth and a new life.
