The rune and its history
The ancient Germanic tribes referred to their characters as runes, although only a small elite of scribes used them. The oldest inscription known today is dated to the period 150 - 200 A.D. These characters had multiple uses. Runes were individual letters, groups of letters or even numbers. The best known tradition today is the rune as a magical symbol (concept rune), as it already existed at that time.
Initially, literature, liturgy, history and law were passed down orally - later in Latin script. A written culture with runes only developed in high medieval Scandinavia as Latin script became more widespread. But only to a limited extent and in the form of an everyday script. It never attained the status of a fully-fledged book and document script. Runes were mainly used for inscriptions commemorating the deceased or special events, for consecrating or gifting objects, as ownership information and as coin inscriptions. Many artisans then added a personal rune to their work so that the artist could be recognized.

Jewelry as a lucky charm
Runes were also considered lucky charms in those days. Protective rune amulets were intended to protect their wearers from the influence of evil spirits and enemies. In those days, people gave an amulet with a protective rune primarily to those who were dear to them. A necklace was therefore a preferred gift for family members, very close friends or a lucky charm for a lover or wife.
The amulet was then also worn to protect against all evil and to preserve the good. If the husband went to war, the wife wore the protective rune amulet and hoped that her husband would soon return unharmed. She probably also wore it for her own personal well-being.
