Traditional glass production in Rome
The main ingredient of ancient Roman glass is silica sand. Roman glass is made from a fusion of soda, calcium, potash, magnesium and aluminum. The typical pale blue-green coloring of Roman glass art is caused by a contamination of the sand with iron oxide.
Roman glass and glass art has a bright, shiny surface in new condition. Roman glass receives its iridescent and matte surface through weathering processes. Authentic replicas and glass replicas therefore display a fire-polished, shiny, bright surface, identical to the time of manufacturing of the original Roman glass.
