The Roman Gladiator Retiarius

In the arenas of the Roman Empire, countless different types of gladiators fought for the amusement of the audience. A part of the attraction lay in the presence of different armament with which the gladiators entered the fights against each other.

The net-fighter Retiarius was a rather unusual gladiator during his time, his existence is only known since the time of the Emperor Caligula’s reign (37-41 CE).
His atypical arms were the cast net, the trident and a short sword or dagger. Compared to the other types of gladiators, the Retiarius was armed quite lightly and didn’t wear a helmet or shield. Dressed only in a loincloth and a belt, his only a shoulder shield and a vambrace served as protection of his left side. His battle tactics had the Retiarius try to cast his net directly over his opposing gladiator. Was the net cast, he used his trident and his sword for close combat. According to written record the opponent of the Retiarius was usually a Secutor.
