The origin of the fights
In ancient Rome gladiators have been professional fighter. They looked almost the same as on the coloring picture gladiator. In public shows they fighted against each other. That meant a fight on life or death. The fight itself was named gladiatur. The word originates from the latin „gladius“meaning crash sword. Gladiator fights started in 264 B.C. and ended in the 5th century. Historians assume that they had a religious background in the context of funerals.

Gladiator fights have been organized by wealthy people. They were able to afford paying for the gladiators as well as for the luxurious feast afterwards. The roman people very much liked these fights. The games and fights got bigger and more luxurious by the time. Up until then the audience was standing at the side, quite densely packed. Later on the first wooden stands to sit on have been made and the first animal hunts became an inherent part of the program.
