The glass of the Vikings
The Viking glasses were made in the early Middle Ages purely by hand on the open fire of the glass blowing furnace. The antique glassware is generally referred to as forest glass. The former glassworks were mainly located in the middle of forests, as these required large quantities of wood for firing the stove. The Viking glass always had a greenish, bluish or brownish colour, which was created by various materials in the quartz sand. Just as typical for the forest glass of the Viking era were small inclusions of air bubbles caused by irregular temperatures during wood firing.
The ribbed bottles widely used by the Vikings were considered to be the vessels of the upper class. Glass bottles and drinking objects were extremely precious at that time and had the status of a prestige object.
Findings of glass drinking utensils are known from numerous Viking settlements in Scandinavia and England.
