About Terra Sigillata tableware
The designation of ‘Terra Sigillata’ goes back to the middle ages were it meant the sealed red clay, but in the 18th century scholars transferred the name to the special ancient Roman ceramics of glossy ware. Terra Sigillata (TS) is, therefore, the modern name of a specific category of Roman table ware, which was developed at the end of the 1st century BC in Italian workshops (Arezzo). The fine tableware was produced in large quantities in cottage factories, which often stamped their goods with their initials.
