The Ancient Fabulist Phaedrus
Born around 20-15 B.C., Gaius Iulius Phaedrus was a Roman fable poet during the reign of the emperors Augustus to Claudius.
According to tradition, Phaedrus invented his fables, most of which were critical of society, primarily for entertainment but also to teach those who were socially low at the time. The context of the Phaedrus fables includes not only the slave-owner society but also everyday relationships.
Phaedrus staged characters that often typified the negative characteristics and behavioural patterns of everyday life. Usually two main actors are depicted who present the contrasts "strong and weak" as well as "morally superior and morally inferior".
