The rune and its history

The old Germanic tribes referred to their characters as runes, which, however, only ruled a small elite of scribes. The oldest inscription known today dates back to the period 150 - 200 AD. These signs had multiple uses. Thus runes were single letters, groups of letters or even numbers. The best known tradition today is that the rune is represented as a magic sign (rune), as it already existed at that time.

At first literature, liturgy, history and law were handed down orally - later in Latin script. A writing culture with runes had only developed in high medieval Scandinavia when Latin writing became more and more widespread. But only in its beginnings and in the form of a utility typeface. It never attained the status of a fully-fledged book and document font. Runes were mainly used for inscriptions to commemorate the deceased or special events, to consecrate or give away objects, as owner information and as coin inscriptions. Many artisans then provided their works with a personal rune, by means of which the artist could be recognized.

The piece of jewellery

The pendant protective rune is carefully crafted with attention to detail and shines in silver. The long leather strap effectively accentuates the rune. It adorns its wearer with a traditional Viking motif and can be worn long or short.

Jewellery as a lucky charm

In those days runes were also considered lucky charms. Protective runes amulets should protect their wearers from the influence of evil spirits and enemies. In those days people gave an amulet with a protective rune to those who were dear to them. A chain was therefore a preferred gift for family members, very close friends or a lucky charm for the lover or wife.
The amulet was worn then also for the protection from all evil and for the preservation of the good. If the husband went to war, the wife wore the protective rune amulet and hoped for an early, intact return of her husband. Certainly she put it on also for the personal well-being.
