Jewellery: An essential part of the Viking Age

Whether necklaces, bracelets or hair jewellery: in addition to high-quality textiles, jewellery was also extremely popular during the Viking Age. Thus, numerous designs were painstakingly created by hand and handed out to family members. The small masterpieces were of great importance to the wearer in many respects. Often one finds religious elements in these individual pieces. Thus the increasing spreading of the Christian faith at that time is reflected here again. The Vikings themselves were pagan and revered Odin and other gods who were attributed to their life virtues.

A special amulet in the Terslev style

This chain pendant in the Terslev style can be attributed to the end of the Viking Age and has its origin in Carolingian-Ottonian models. This piece of jewellery was made in the second half of the 10th century, when the style spread throughout the Baltic Sea region. It is characterised by the finest craftsmanship in the granulation technique. This is also attested to by finds from the island of Hiddensee.

While in the original granulated gold balls and fine wires were painstakingly soldered onto a plate by goldsmiths in filigree precision work, today's replica is cast completely in one piece and then gilded.

The detailed workmanship

The Haithabu amulet in the Terslev style consists of pure tin and is manufactured as a metal casting. This product got its name after the place where it was found: the Viking settlement 'Haithabu'. While the length of the amulet is about 38 mm, it has a diameter of about 31 mm. The pendant receives its completely special charm by its color and the unmistakable gloss of the fine gilding. In order to be able to wear the amulet also appreciatively, it is fastened to a leather tape, which can be adjusted individually in the length.

An amulet with the very special something

This Viking amulet belongs by far to the most impressive pieces of jewellery of the Viking age. Because the detail-faithful and very fine work shows the desire of the Vikings at that time that the trailer should make a completely special statement: the mixture of two religions, which was not always completely voluntary. Thus they tried to express the change in a plastic way. The 'infinite knot' embraces the Christian cross.

Nowadays this amulet can be worn as a special piece of jewellery or as a fascinating message of the Middle Ages. If you also decide for this high-quality product, you can not only look forward to the pure amulet.
