Even in ancient times, people knew to appreciate oil lamps with plastic representation. There were numerous motifs and shapes of lamps. Roman light sources
Oil lamps, by the way, were ubiquitous sources of light in ancient Rome. Olive oil was cheap to get in ancient times and so most lamps were filled with this raw material and used as a cheap and grateful source of light. Occasionally candles or kienspahn were also used. Nowadays we recommend filling a natural oil ( olive, sunflower or rapeseed) into the lamps, which come with a wick and are glazed inside. The decorative oil lamps made of clay were found in every Roman household in larger numbers. And by the way, they also give a wonderful warm light in the garden or on the terrace!
All oil lamps in our store are made in the traditional way from two-part molds and fired to a very high temperature. After drying, the picture lamps are usually covered with an engobe, an antique clay slip, which gives the lamp its wonderful red hue. The high firing temperature ensures that the lamps are generally tight. The inside of the lamp is glazed to protect it from heat. However, it can happen that oil is drawn out over the "lamp nose" and runs down the lamp. To be on the safe side, a heat-resistant coaster should be placed under the oil lamp.
