Oil lamps Warning
The lamp must be kept out of the reach of children when it is ready for operation, burning and extinguished. In the past, several deaths and serious lung injuries have been recorded nationwide in children who have drunk lamp oil or sucked on the wicks. Synthetic lamp oils, which are commercially available, cause severe to fatal poisoning of the lungs when inhaled, which can easily happen if swallowed or spat out, even in the smallest quantities. As there is no possibility to produce a child safety lock according to DIN 14059 for historical lamps, we would like to point out to our customers that they have to be supervised. The following oils have been tested and found suitable: sunflower oil, olive oil, nut oil and rapeseed oil.
A unique Piece for Unique Collectors
To be able to light one's home after nightfall was just as important during antiquity as it is today. Therefore, lamps, especially oil lamps, were very popular in ancient Roman times. They came in all shapes and sizes. Some were just simple and functional and made of clay, other were real pieces of art made only from the most precious metals. The lamp at hand is one of the latter examples. It is entirely made of bronze and shaped as a duck. The bronze used is highly polished giving the lamp itself a nearly golden exterior. Furthermore, the duck lamp is easy to carry should you require it to be moved while lit and filled with oil.
If you two want to experience how the better off Romans used to light their homes at night or if you are a collector of fine an d rare art pieces then this is the object for you!
Despite the fact that it is made from bronze, modern lamp oil still are not valid for use. You should stick with using vegetable oils as fuel - especially olive oil in order to maximize authenticity. Modern lighting fluids can cause the bronze to melt and pose a serious fire hazard.
