Real natural wax plates
You can either use beeswax granules or simply press the prepared wax plates into the board for easy touching up.
- 10 natural-colored boards in a set
- Size 200x100 x0.5 mm each
And this is how it works:
The old wax is scraped out of the board. The wax plate is then inserted and pressed down piece by piece. An antique and very helpful tool is the wax spatula, which was often found in connection with wax tablet originals.
Natural wax panels: easy to use!
To easily repair your wax tablets from the Forum Traiani Roman store, you can either use beeswax granules - also available here - or simply press the wax plates provided here into the tablet. We will also tell you how to make your own antique wax tablet.
Repairing the wax tablet:
The worn wax is scraped out of the wax tablet. The new wax panel must now be adjusted and cut to size with scissors or a knife. The wax plate is then inserted and pressed on piece by piece - preferably with the wax spatula, which you can also purchase on these pages of the Römershop - until it is firmly seated in the wax tablet.
- Ten natural-colored wax tablets
- Suitable for cutting to size
- Size: 200x100 x0.5 mm each
Roman wax tablet: Antique "notebook" made by yourself!
The beech wood with indentation and wax inside! The result is a Roman wax tablet. The Roman wax tablet (lat. tabula cerata) usually has a rectangular shape and is filled with colored beeswax in the recessed inner field of the wooden tablet - natural or black, you can decide for yourself! By scratching it with a stylus, the lighter-colored wood shone through and the writing could be read more easily. We still have this fact to thank today for a large number of Latin carvings on the inner surface of the writing tablets, which were accidentally scratched too deeply into the wax when writing - even then, however, the wax tablets were regularly repaired. The wax was smoothed with the back of the stylus for rewriting.
Ancient wax tablets were also used as practice boards for school lessons, as the writing could be erased again and again with the flat back of the stylus. Incidentally, this is where the term "tabula rasa" comes from: "to clean the blackboard". Even today, schoolchildren are still enthusiastic about the ancient wax tablets, especially if they have made the wax tablet themselves! And a clear advantage over the conventional writing book: mistakes are easily smoothed out and even with the real wax tablets in natural or black, a completely new writing surface is created!
