Making Flour like the Legionaries

Legionaries were in charge of their own rations. They only were presented with the raw materials and had to process them themselves. That also meant the production of flour. In order to be able to produce enough of this white powder they carried querns or manual mills with them. Those hand mills consisted of two large and rounded stones sitting on top of one another. The upper stone came with some kind of grip. Through a hole in the middle the legionary in charge of the flour production could drop some grains into the quern. Then he started rotating the upper stone, thus, causing friction that made the grains into a more or less fine powder. This powder was later collected. And used for baking bread or others things. Flour made like this usually produced rather coarse bread that did not stand in very high regard with the legionaries.

If you too want to experience what it meant like to make your own flower with a hand mill made from stone, then you should not pass up this opportunity and become the owner of a real quern today! It is a must-have item for anyone that loves to roleplay as a legionary or often visits reenactment camps or events!

Nothing screams commitment like making your very own flower, in order to make your very own bread.
