Diploma militaris - Military Diplomas of the Roman Empire

Roman military diplomas were small, written bronze plates, which were manufactured in the form of a diptichon. These diplomas were given to soldiers or veterans, but mainly to the so-called auxiliary soldiers = auxiliaries. Such auxiliary troops were recruited from foreign countries to provide additional support for the Roman army. After their release from service in the Roman army, such soldiers were able to acquire Roman citizenship, which was accompanied by many privileges. This was also the main component of such diplomas.

The text was almost always the same, which made the later reconstruction of the finds much easier. These bronze plates were written on both sides. In the beginning there was the very extensive titulature and all tribute of the respective emperor - e.g. Neckarburgen = Hadrianus. Only further down followed name, rank, period of service as well as the unit of the soldier. On the outer side the military diploma was signed by seven witnesses of the military range, whereby the truth and authenticity of the document were proven. Hadrian's military diploma, available in the online shop, is a solidly crafted and authentic replica made from an original find.
