The history of forest glass
Until the year 475 A.D., the knowledge of glass production from ancient Rome was lost. Only King Clovis from the Frankish Empire, who was known for his violent subjugation of the Frankish tribes, revived it and the first glassworks were built, especially in the wooded areas. The so-called forest glassworks were established in the Bohemian and Thuringian forests.
Here forest glass was produced as utility glass. In addition to simple glasses, cups and bowls, beautifully decorated goblets were also created. In addition, forest glass for church windows was also produced in the kilns of monasteries. Unfortunately, however, the success of forest glass did not last long. Due to the rise in the price of wood, the decline in the forest area and thus the lack of fuel, the production of forest glass came to an end far too early in the 19th century.
The special thing about forest glass
From the Middle Ages to early modern times, this glass was produced north of the Alps in the so-called forest glass works. The greenish colour of the potash glass comes from the iron oxides contained in the sand. A quantity of less than 0.1% iron oxide is sufficient to achieve this green colour.

The Nuppen Cup
One of the most common drinking glass forms in the High and Late Middle Ages was the Nuppen cup. They were widespread both in the Eastern Roman Empire and in the Western Roman Empire. As the name suggests, the characteristic feature of the dumpling cup is the many, often very small, dips on the wall of the vessel. In addition, these drinking vessels are usually unornamented.
