The original model of that wax tablet out of real beech comes from the Codex Manesse of the 14th century.

The Codex Manesse

The "Codex Manesse", as well called "Great handwriting of songs from Heidelberg", was created in something in between 1300 and 1340 in Zurich and is the most extensive collection of Middle High German poetry of songs and sayings.
  • dated to Middle Ages around 1400
  • size: 18x 18 cm
  • material: massive beech 8 mm
  • included equipment: wooden pencil
  • Famous miniatures
Famous became the handwriting mainly because of colourful miniatures of entire pages, which could be categorised to certain verses of the 137 singers - one other, that can't be connected to any poet, only is a feather's drawing. The miniatures show poets in idealised form during courtly activities and are considered as the most important documents of Upper Rhine's gothic book illumination. The miniatures were made by 4 painters.
