Romans loved good smells and fragrances just as we do today. No doubt about it. In order to fill a whole room with a good odor you have to be creative. Romans achieved this goal by using different means of incensing. One of which was to put fine smelling herbs and flower petals into a chalice. Afterwards said chalice was indirectly put aflame and could therefore work as a heating system for the substances in it. They slowly began to burn and fumigate they fine odors through the whole room. The ancient Romans used a waste assortment of different materials to achieve this sort of room-filling good fragrance. Mostly rose petals and frankincense were used. But other materials as well such as essential oils, lavender, fruit peels and so on.
Chalices suited for that job can be found in archaeological excavation sides all over Europe. They appear especially often near old temples and religious institutions. If you too are inclined to veil your own home into clouds of well-smelling fumes then the item at hand is just what you have been looking for! It also makes for a great present or can be used during cosplay events or reenactment events.
