Hadrian - the man from the Adriatic
The 14th Emperor of Rome Publius Aelius Hadrianus (76 - 138 AD), called Hadrian for short, owes his name to the ancient tradition of naming emperors after the place of origin of their parents. His came from Hadria (Adria), the modern ATRI in the Abruzzo province of Teramo, only 10 km from the Adriatic Sea. Like his imperial predecessor and distant relative Marcus Ulpius Traianus, or Trajan (53 - 117 AD), he was raised and based in Hispania, modern Spain. Hadrian was involved in few wars, instead focussing on strengthening the Roman Empire and on its efficient defence. Various border fortifications, including the famous Hadrian's wall in Northern England which was named after him, were used for this purpose.
Hadrian and his era of peace
Hadrian was a man of many talents, a polymath of ancient Rome. His overriding interest was Greek culture, centred on Athens, where he built a large library. Many other cities of the Empire, Rome in particular, inspired Hadrian during his reign, which is remembered as a historic period of peace and intensive construction of buildings such as the Pantheon, Castel Sant'Angelo, where Hadrian is buried, and the famous Hadrian Villa at Tivoli. His thirst for knowledge and learning, his rhetorical skills and his quick wit, as well as his pronounced sense of justice resulted in his special position among the eminent personages of antiquity.

Since antiquity there has been a long tradition of perpetuating exceptional historical figures in statuary. The Hadrian bust appears in the long gallery of ancestors along with other greats such as Caesar, Augustus (Octavian) or even the famous Roman philosopher Seneca. An archaeological find of an original bust of Hadrian in the sea at Caesarea, which could be dated to the 2nd century AD, served as a template.

Alabaster is a high quality, natural limestone, which is characterized particularly by its exceptional malleability. Alabaster is weather resistant, so can be used outdoors.
