In the Antiquity Homer was THE poet. He was the great teacher and model of the entire epoch. Homer, in Greek Omeros, was the creator of the epics Ilias and Odyssey. He was the poet standing at the beginning of the Greek and European literature and his work have effects until today. The two epics include 24 books each and are written in a different language, in which the ionic and eolian language get mixed. As lifetime of the probably blind Homer the 8th century BC is considered.
Innumerable artist before and after the turning point let themselves get inspired by his work, not to forget the great Wolfgang Goethe. There probably are only a few humans left that haven't heard about the ancient heroic deeds of the nearly to invulnerable heroes Achilleus in front of the gates of Troy and the following wandering of Odysseus. Until today we use synonyms like Achilles' heel, odyssey, Trojan horse - for only mentioning a few - to describe for example weaknesses, an adventurous journey or even a bad surprise. Homer kept on living through his stories!
The original of the bust of the great Homer is in the National Museum Naples. The bust is fabricated out of alabaster stucco and equipped with ancient patina.
