The Origins of the Maltese Cross
The classical design of the Maltese cross is always reminiscent of the sacrificial death of Christ and can therefore be found on various Christian orders. The symbol of both the Catholic Order of Malta and the Protestant Order of St John thus testifies to the Christian mission which both represent the Order of St John. It is also the national symbol of Malta and the former maritime republic of Amalfi.
The Order of St John was founded in 1099, but it has only been resident in Malta since 1530. It is not certain when he adopted the characteristic cross as a symbol. It can be proved on order coats in its today's symmetrical arranged form at least already on drawings in the year 1480.
As a characteristic feature this cross consists of four white "arrows". The result is an isosceles cross drawn on a black or red background. In heraldry the colours have the following meaning: white stands for purity or innocence, black for strength and red for battle, life, commitment, blood. While there are different interpretations for the 8 points, the 4 arms of the cross remind of the knightly cardinal virtues "wisdom", "justice", "bravery" and "moderation". A possible assignment could be the eight "tongues" of the Order of Malta:
Provence, Auvergne, France, Italy, Aragon, England, Germany and Castile.
A coaster with Christian symbolic power
This coaster measures 10 x 10 x 2,5 cm and is coated with cork on the underside. The material chosen was terra cotta (Italian: burnt earth), which was subsequently decorated in the corresponding colours of the Maltese cross. Both the coaster and the later outer packaging of this product consist of purely biological components, which further reinforces the natural character of this coaster.
