The Vikings - the people of discovery from the far north

Who is not fascinated by the daring and brave Vikings today? Those brave and rough Northmen who travelled the world's oceans over a thousand years ago and discovered America centuries before Columbus? The men and women, often described as coarse and rough, were not only powerful warriors, but also very resourceful and good craftsmen.

  • Dimensions 9 x 9 cm.
  • True to original replica of a historical find.

This beautifully shaped drinking cup gives an impression of the craftsmanship of the Vikings. The piece is a replica of a drinking cup found during archaeological excavations in the old Viking town of Birka in the ninth century. The cup was made of high-quality Bohemian forest glass in a craftsman's workshop in detailed handicraft.

Not just a drinking vessel, but an important status symbol

At the time of the Vikings, however, such a cup was far more than just a simple drinking vessel: drinking cups - or drinking bowls - were extremely precious and valuable at that time, so that the possession of such a vessel was usually reserved only for the richest and most powerful members of the tribe. More than 1,000 years ago, glass was, of course, by no means the mass-produced product that can be found in every household today: only a few highly respected craftsmen knew how to make it. Melting glass at high temperatures was much more difficult - and dangerous - than it is today.

Handcrafted by Bohemian glassblowers

Nevertheless, the craftsmen in the Bohemian glassworks make every effort to replicate the millennia-old, traditional handicrafts of the Vikings as faithfully as possible. And this effort is worth it: This Viking drinking cup is one of the most authentic that you can get today and is not comparable with other, inferior products from industrial production. The cup is about 9cm high and has a diameter of 9cm - just like its historical counterpart - and holds about 250 millilitres of liquid.
