Roman Bowl with Zodiac in Terra Sigillata
An exceptionally beautiful bowl is a copy with a relief of the zodiac signs. Wrap-around, the Zodiac signs adorn the ancient drinking vessel with a stylish craft on the Red Terra Sigillata.
First described as sealed red clay in the middle ages which was applied by scholars to the ancient Romans ceramics in the 18th century, modern scholars began to call it Terra Sigillata (TS), a specific category of Roman table ware, which was developed at the end of the 1st century BC in Italian workshops (Arezzo). The fine tableware was produced in large quantities in cottage industry (factories). The goods in different variations found a market in the entire Roman Empire. And through the Roman-Shop we can still today enjoy the reddish clay popular dishes.
The surrounding relief of the Zodiac is modelled after a Roman chalice. The bowl is really exceptionally and richly decorated with a fine and very detailed relief.
