The Roman gladiator Retiarius
In the arenas of the Roman Empire, a variety of different types of gladiators fought for the public. Part of the attraction was also to have gladiators with different armaments compete in fights against each other.
The retiarius as a net fighter was a rather unusual gladiator at the time and has only been known since the reign of Emperor Caligula (37-41 AD).
His rather atypical armament consisted of a throwing net, a trident, and a short sword or dagger.
