Marcus Cicero: an ambitious young lawyer becomes the star of Roman society

Who was the man whose portrait you can admire? At the end of his life, Cicero was the most famous orator, that antiquity has ever produced. At the same time, he was a writer, rhetorician and philosopher, politician and lawyer. In the year 63 BC, he held the position of Consul and is therefore at the top of the Roman Republic.
But this achievement was far from being expected. He derives from a family that was not part of the aristocracy, but he had to battle his way as a lawyer upwards.

Words are the weapons of rhetoric

His opponents came from aristocracy and military. They were better connected than Cicero was, they were often corrupt and conniving. Cicero made his ascent through clever tactics, reliable friendships and, above all: due to his enormous rhetorical talent. Because he was able to pull the majority on his side! A highlight was the condemnation of the corrupt Governor of Sicily, Gaius Verres. In the process, he out-competed the best orator of Rome, Quintus Hortensius Hortales.

Pain, sorrow and tragedy - the bitter end of the rhetorician

The last years of Cicero are characterized by bitter confrontations with his opponents. Cicero stands for the Roman Republic which he first defends against Caesar, then against Marcus Antonius. His beloved daughter dies after childbirth in the year 45 BC, he himself is beheaded two years later on the orders of Antony. Cicero leaves a great work. It includes philosophical writings, letters to his friends, speeches and works about rhetoric. Last but not least, he has taught the Romans Stoic philosophy.

The cultural history of Europe as a whole is marked by his rhetorical legacy. The bust of Marcus Cicero is thus not only the image of a famous man. It is a work of art made of Alabaster, to express commemoration, the power of philosophy and tragedy.

Interesting facts about the material: Alabaster

Alabaster is a type of plaster that has been used by sculptors since Roman times. Today one of the largest sites of Alabaster production is Volterra in Italy. Alabaster is harder than regular plaster. That is why it is the best product for producing sculptures. However: Do not place the bust into the open air or your garden, as the material is not water-resistant. These works of art are made for indoors only.

In addition to the production of busts, this special plaster is also used to form beautiful bowls, cups and lamps. Even in stained-glass windows, alabaster is often used, because thinly applied, the material is translucent.
