The earliest mosaics from the middle of the 3rd millennium before Christ in the area between Euphrates and Tigris are documented. In Greek and Roman antiquity, the art of mosaics was highly developed and produced beautiful works. In the Italian Renaissance, plate mosaics spread in particular, and the art of mosaic with small stones again experienced a significant boom in the Art Nouveau period.
