Enchanting profiled Roman fibula
This Roman fibula is a replica of an original Germanic find. The vigorously-polished fibula served to secure the women's attire, the peplum. It was worn on the shoulder, and was of course also used as a type of jewellery. The Germanic find has been dated to the 1st or 2nd century AD. The Roman fibula was especially popular in the Germanic provinces. It was made of bronze and, as the name implies, vigorously polished.
How the Roman fibula is made
Made from bronze, the Roman fibula is a genuinely unique piece, just like the original, because the mould is only used once. The first step in the production is the creation of a wax mould. This is coated or covered with embedding compound to create the green form. After the so-called melting out of the green form, in which a cavity is formed, the molten bronze is poured into the mould. The liquid metal filling the mould is at a temperature of about 1300 degrees.
The penultimate step is to break the mould so that the raw casting in bronze can be removed. Now the recreated Roman fibula needs to be vigorously polished to achieve its full beauty.
