Pencil roman bronze stilus
A massive ancient writing object is the pencil, in latin called stilus, out of polished bronze. A true piece of jewellery on each desk of fans of the ancient writing culture and also usable at any time.
Bronze pencil – stilus – with style!
This bronze pencil or ancient stilus was produced very lavishly in the traditional technique of the "lost form". For that for every pencil an own wax model is made and put into a plaster form. The form is heated for the wax flowing out of the sprue. The metal is heated, too and casted into the now empty form of plaster. Afterwards we destroy the form and clean the raw cast. Finally we polish the blank and it is cleaned to shine!
- pencil’s length: circa 10 cm
- polished out of bronze cast
- completely functional as a writing object and for smoothing
The ancient writing object pencil - stilus - has tradition
The pencil was used as a writing object for writing on slates and wax tablets until the 1960s. The look of the pencil mostly was round or squared, consisted out of iron, bronze, bone or sometimes silver. The pencil top was pressed into the wax for writing. With the flat end mistakes could be corrected and because of smoothing the wax with the flat end of the pencil the wax tablets could be used again. Some Roman pencils have the form of the bust of Minerva, because she was considered as the goddess of protection of teachers and poets in the Roman time. Let yourself be enchanted by this extraordinary "notebook" with this elegant bronze pencil!
