Ancient Egyptian God of the Dead
Anubis is the ancient Egyptian god of the dead. In Greek-Roman times he mutated into a cosmic deity, a guardian of heaven and earth who brought light to people.
Iconography
Anubis , which resembles a jackal or a dog with long bat ears, is usually depicted in a lying position, with pointed ears and a tail lowered or curled upwards, often in black or dark colour. It often lies on a sarcophagus-like box, sometimes depicted as an antithetically resting pair. His dog/jackalk-head carries remarkably long ears. But there are also depictions of him in anthropomorphic form - standing, walking or sitting. In these Anubis runs, stands or rests on his hind legs like a human being. He often wears a magical ribbon around his neck, a kind of scarf, and has an apron wrapped around his hips. He often wears a three-piece wig that hangs backwards and over both shoulders.
The representation as a lying canide is the older and original form. As a mixed figure between man and animal, Anubis only confronts us from the New Kingdom onwards.

Roman Empire
In the Roman Empire Anubis appears on images in Hellenized form. Sometimes he wears a kind of toga. Because he, like the Greek god Hermes/Merkur, is considered a spiritual leader in the land of the dead, the Romans later equate him with this god.
Tasks
Anubis is considered the keeper of the realm of the dead. His main tasks are to supervise the correct ritual embalming ceremony and to escort the soul of the deceased on his journey beyond the grave to the "Field of Heavenly Offerings". Only he may touch the dead, with which he cleans them at the same time. Later, at the court for the dead, he "counts" or "weighs" the hearts. As the judge of the dead, he judges the dead and determines which of them is allowed to sit on the throne in the hereafter and is awarded eternal life.
