"The Library of Pergamon has great plans! It is already a temple of study. And who knows, maybe one day it will be as big and famous as the Library of Alexandria! And when the Ptolemies no longer supply us with papyrus, we just write on animal skins" ...that's how it began to be written on parchment.
Pergamon - ancient centre for art and culture
Pergamon was a Greek city in antiquity, located near the west coast of Asia Minor in present-day Turkey. Pergamon was the capital of the so-called Pergaman Empire during the 3rd and 2nd centuries. In the dynasty of the Attalids, the city became an impressive cultural centre of Hellenism, which was to compete with Athens. Pergamon was a special city both architecturally and culturally. The most famous building is the Pergamon Altar, formerly dedicated to Zeus and Athena. The impressive remains of the frieze of this altar are now in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
