The original writing tablets found in England were made of thin wood, they are known worldwide by the epithet 'The Vindolanda Tablets'. The most important pieces found describe Roman everyday life of the auxiliary unit in the border camp of Vindolanda, near Hadrian's Wall (lat. Vallum Aelium), on the modern border between Scotland and England. The numerous tablets, now burnt in parts, record everyday messages sent between the soldiers on duty and their families - in other words, they served as writing sheets, for which purpose they are also effectively applicable today.
The soil released the still decipherable birthday invitation to one Sulpicia Lepidina, sent by the wife of the camp commander, although the tablet had wound up in the ground in about 100 A.D.! Besides, it is noteworthy that the unit comprised some 750 soldiers, half of which only were present, and there was as well only one single centurio (officer) among them. Since the tablets mention only a very low number of wounded persons, it was concluded that the camp enjoyed a peaceful time.
The reconstruction that you may acquire here is made out of very thin wood, observing the original dimensions, and it can be inscribed individually or with archaeological texts. The wooden tablet is delivered without decoration. The third image shows an original sample.
