A text written on papyrus is a book for eternity
Records dating from the second century A.D. prove the durability of papyrus (latin, cyperus papyrus = papyrus sedge). A doctor by the name of Galenos reports having read 300 year old scrolls. Modern dating methods support his statement.

Scroll - The ancient book
Those wishing to exhibit their intellectual status posseses a well stocked library, as a rule consisting of shelf on shelf lined with books. The books present day rectangular format owes its existence mainly to the printing press. In ancient times another form of the recorded word was preferred: In all advanced cultures of the ancients there was less flipping of pages and more rolling.
For the requirements of the day, the scroll established itself as the optimal medium for the written word. The fascination with this form still carries over today because it symbolizes, much more so than the conventional book, the mystery contained in the written word.
Papyrus-scroll
Papyrus was the writing volume for the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians for several centuries.
Papyrusscrolls was the replacement of old writing tools that have been used by Latins "liber" (Bast).Mart.III 2,11:
Wem willst du, Büchlein, Geschenk werden?
Eile, dir einen Beschützer zu gewinnen,
dass nicht rasch geschleppt in die schwarze Küche
du Thunfisch mit feuchtem Papier umhüllst
oder für Weihnrauch oder Pfeffer du Tüte bist.
Flüchtest dich in Faustinus' Schoß?
The title used to be written papyrus on this titulus to sort scrolls quickly at the library by reading the title. On the last papyrus sheet (right) is often glued to a wooden stick (Nabel, lat. Umbilicus) this made the scrolls stable when papyrus was rolled (Mart.II 6.10 f).
In complex scrolls the two ends of the rod were painted, or decorate the endpieces (top and bottom) of the papyrus scroll.
Even the edges of the scroll was smoothed with pumice and colored (Mart.I 67.10; VIII72).
Another special feature of an ancient scroll is the illustration from celebrities to medicinal plants, scientific scrolls were decorated, Pliny remarked secundus (NH XXXV, 11). Expensive papyrus scroll were protected in a colored shell (even purple) and kept in parchment.
For keeping multiple scrolls (papyrus rolls) they used wooden container (or capsae scrinia).
Educated Romans liked to represent a capsa to emphasize their culture..
