The real goose feathers were used in antiquity to the Middle Ages as a pen to write on papyrus or parchment too. Especially for the elaborate calligraphy quills are suitable.
The quills are used immediately, since they are already cut. In order to give them more hardship, they can be cured in a heated quartz sand (take for example, bird sand). To an old pot filled with sand and heat it on the stove - until about lukewarm. Simply insert the quill with the top and harden for a few minutes!
Even without curing the resulting nibs write a clean result. The pen tip is always to be cut into different widths new writing tips.
