The Aureus (plural: Aurei) is usually a Roman golden coin of about eight grammes and high fineness, which had a very high value when issued and spread across all the Roman sphere of influence. It came to existence already in the time of Sulla, about 82 B.C., weighing then 1/30 of the Roman pound (approx. 327.5 g), i. e. about 10.92 g. The Denarius was the main full embodied coin of the Roman empire from about 27 B.C. till the 4th century A.D.
