House Altar
this replica of a Roman house altar in patinated alabaster gypsum is an ornament for each antiques' lover. The original was probably a Roman altar framed by the house gods, the Laren - gods that preserved the home - and it was used for incense to honor the genius Juno and other deities.
In Roman times, the most important rites in the house was that celebrated in honor of Vesta, the goddess of the hearth. The Romans were convinced that their house was guarded by a god in the form of a serpent, and therefore they brought daily offerings of food or wine.
