Votive Altar
This genuine Roman votive altar of patinated alabaster gypsum is produced according to an original from France.
In Roman times, the most important rites were celebrated in the house to honor the goddess of the hearth, Vesta. This was probably a consecrated altar flanked by two lares and was operated with incense to honor the genius of the Juno and other deities.
The Romans were also convinced that their house was guarded by a god in the form of a serpent, and therefore brought daily offerings of food or wine. The hollow on the top serves the incense.
